- Something to do with ghosts and someone being haunted by them. I was thinking of taking a picture of a room, manipulating it, drawing a person in the room, and then drawing a ghostly person with them. The ghostly person is to represent a lost/ past lover. It could be literal, as in the person lost their lover, or metaphorical, as in the lover left the person but they are still haunted by their presence.
- Another idea is a self portrait of myself. I would take a photo of my face but only use half of it. I would draw the other half. The photo half would show the normal, calm, shy half of myself. The drawn side would somehow represent the outgoing, creative, and crazy half of me.
- Another is to take a photo of my profile (side view of face) and then manipulate it to make it seem as if the top part of my head is opened up. From my head will flow drawings and words that show who I am and what I think about. I am sort of liking this idea the best.
- My last idea is too try and represent an "art block" or "inspiration/ motivation block." I would probably take a photo of myself to incorporate into the picture. I'm not really sure how to show the actual "block." Maybe a monster of some sort?

Final Project
For my final project, I will be honest and say that I have been thinking about it, but I can't really decide on something that I think that I would be satisfied with. I have a few ideas however, but I would like some feedback on what you guys think would be the most successful. I want to incorporate a lot of drawing for this project since it is open ended, but also use photographs. Here are my ideas so far:

Seems like you have a couple ideas to choose from. I think it would be cool to combine the second and third idea. Maybe you could work in elements of both to make one super interesting semi-photgraphic but mostly illustrative image?
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea of animating yourself. Is there anyway you can do your profile with a mixture of photos and drawing?
ReplyDeleteI love the ghost idea, but I think all of them could work. Self-portraits are always an interesting pursuit and it would be cool to see the different approaches you could take to that. I also like the idea of representing artist's block as an animal. It reminds me of a French animated short that I love called "In Between". I think the artists did a great job of using an animal to represent an emotional/mental affliction, in this case the character's shyness. I'll try and link it here.

I think both the 2nd and 3rd ideas could be really successful as the content is yourself so you have much more possibility when it comes to what you want to include. As someone else said your could combine them. Maybe a 3/4 view so you can see the front and the side of your head allowing for the use of both ideas.
ReplyDeleteI definitely think your second idea here is really cool! I'd really like to see how you'd blend in your real face with the drawing! Is it going to be directly down the middle? Like to see what sort of duality you'll play with between the two versions of yourself
ReplyDeleteI respond to the second and third the most. I like the idea of melting photographs and drawings together. For the second idea, you will have to find a way to transition from photograph to drawing unless you want a yin yang composition or contrast.
ReplyDeleteI definitely enjoy the second idea with the self portrait the most. I think that it will be a great used of mixed media, as well as a very interesting and therapeutic process. You could also layer a background and either have one cohesive background done on photoshop or a background that leads halfway into the image and then is completed with a drawing on the other side.
ReplyDeleteAll of your ideas sound like they have potential, and I am not sure which one is the "best" sorry! Whichever one you choose though, I would really like to see your hand illustration! You are so talented in drawing and I think it will enhance whatever direction you choose so get those sketches ready! :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with Megan, the first idea sounds the most interesting. Theres so much you could do on this subject. Maybe you could look around at photographs that have apparitions or orbs in them to get you inspired.
ReplyDeleteI really like your second and third ideas, mostly because I love mixing all different mediums together. I also like how you are wanting to describe yourself in your projects, because knowing the subject matter can always make a project more successful.
ReplyDeleteHi Rachel
ReplyDeleteGosh, I think all these ideas could work, so for me it depends on what motivates you, what you are the most passionate about in terms of the above ideas. In a way, they all seem to be self portraits but about different aspects of yourself. By now, hopefully you have trusted your instincts-- the only thing you can do to proceed as an artist to my mind anyways -- and have committed to content building the images you will need to convey the message. Try to have all content building done and a first stab at it by Monday crit. Without a tangible image to respond to, not sure how fair the crit will be to your ideas above, all are very worthy and well stated.
